Mrs. Wanda Ware Shinn Mitchell, 96, a longtime resident and business woman of Belington, went home to be with the Lord, early Saturday morning, June 13, 2020, in the Talbott Personal Care Home at Belington.
She was born May 20, 1924. in the Talbott Community near Belington, a daughter of the late Daniel B. and Nancy Regester Ware. She was twice married; first to William Sexton Shinn, who preceded her in death in 1968, and second, she was married to Roy “Squirrely” Mitchell, who preceded her in death in 1993.
Survivors include two sons, William David Shinn and wife, Wanda, of Cary, N.C., and Luther Paul Shinn of Elkins; one granddaughter, Carolyn Renee Ricciardelli and husband, Nathan, of Wilmington, N.C.; one great-grandson Carter Ricciardelli; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Reta Delva House, Elva Gay Oldaker and Bertha Virginia Wagner; and two brothers, Okey Ware and Wilbert “Bill” Ware.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Mitchell attended the schools of Barbour County and obtained her GED in 1970, and graduated from the University of Hard Knocks through Alderson Broaddus College in 1985.
She was the owner and operator of the Golden Rule Department Store in Belington for over 50 years and was manager from 1968 to 2001 when the store was sold. While operating the Family store she was known to give away furniture to families in need. While owning the Golden Rule Dept. Store one of the things she most enjoyed was traveling to High Point, North Carolina, to purchase furniture. In years past, she had taught Sunday School in the Belington and surrounding areas for over 50 years. She was an avid painter of churches, natural scenery, and portraits of people, and took professional painting training to learn to do so. She was an avid reader especially when it came to her Bible which she read on a daily basis.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Belington Senior Center, where she served as secretary for five years. She was a devout Christian and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
There will be a private family visitation and funeral on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, from the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington with Pastor Bryan Headley Officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington.
