BARB
Thomas W. "Tom" Barb, of Reno, Nevada, and formerly of Elkins, recently died at his home in Reno. He had been recovering from cancer treatment and was in improving health. Death was unexpected.
He was born in Elkins on Jan. 7, 1948. The son of Robert L. Barb and Natalie Tyre Barb, who proceeded him in death. Also preceding him in death was one son, Thomas Christopher Barb of Reno, Nevada.
He is survived by two sons, Robert Lee Barb, of Darby, Montana, and David Nicholas Barb and wife, Taryn, of Reno. Also surviving are grandchildren, Cody Lee Barb and Kami Grace Barb, also of Reno; one brother, David R. Barb and wife, Brenda, of Muscatine, Iowa; nephews, Kevin Hare, of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Ben Barb and wife, Jean, of Bothell, Washington, William D. Barb of Elkins, and Andrew T. Barb of Iowa City, Iowa; cousins, Beverly Mullenex of Parsons, Dottie Murphy and husband, Roger, of Parsons, Lawernce S. Phillips of Frederick, Maryland, and Lorraine Tyre of Morgantwon.
Tom was a 1965 graduate of Elkins High School. Following graduation he attended West Virginia University before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Tom served as a helicopter mechanic and was stationed in Vietnam and Japan. Following his military stint, he returned to WVU to complete his degree and subsequently enrolled in the University of Wyoming Law School, where he completed his law degree. He served as deputy prosecuting attorney in Casper, Wyoming, Douglas, Wyoming and most recently Reno.
In 2006, he gained some national notoriety when he served as lead prosecutor in the case involving the murder of the state of Nevada controller. This case was featured on several television shows, most notably, "48 Hours." There have also been several books written documenting the case.
Tom loved to hunt, play golf and especially take care of his grandchildren.
Tom's request for cremation is being honored. No formal services are planned at this time.
