Thomas ‘Tom’ Edgar Styer
STYER
Thomas “Tom” Edgar Styer, 79, passed away on Feb. 15, 2023, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Although he was in poor health, death was unexpected.
He was born July 22, 1943, to the late Augustus and Oakley Styer in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
Tom graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1961. He had several jobs over the years, including school bus driver and mechanic. His job as a sewing machine mechanic for Bata Shoe Company brought him to West Virginia in 1971. When Bata closed, he took his skills to Reidbord Brothers. He eventually retired as a maintenance man for Jim Fisher in 2005.
Tom is survived by his wife of 48 years, Peggy L. Dulaney Styer, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1974.
He is also survived by three daughters, Kimberly “Kim” Styer, Kathy Matthews and her husband, Buck, and Brandie Styer and her significant other, Aaron Johns; two stepsons, Joe “Smokey” Weese and his wife, Debby, and James “Jay” Weese and his wife, Becky; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew; two sisters, Francis “Sis” Styer and Robin Miller; and one brother, Ronnie Styer and his wife, Penny.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by one sister, Judy Pace.
Tom enjoyed tinkering in his shed building things for his family. He especially enjoyed going to the races every weekend at Elkins Raceway. From watering the track and pushing wrecked cars in the 70s and 80s to visiting and telling stories to everyone in the pits as of late, he rarely missed a weekend. He was a very social person with many friends. He made friends everywhere he went and never knew a stranger. He will be missed by many.
Tom’s request for cremation was honored and a family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy can be sent to 33 Poling Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Thomas Edgar Styer.
