Delores Joan McCollam Carder Comer

Delores Joan McCollam Carder Comer, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, peacefully passed away on Feb. 22, 2023, at the age of 90 while living at home.
She was born Jan. 29, 1933, to the late Willis Lee McCollam and Geraldine Scheitlin McCollam.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Delbert Earl Carder; and husband, Carl Gordon Comer, who died in 1987.
Also deceased are two sons, Steven Earl Carder and David Alan Comer; brothers, Michael McCollam and James Richard McCollam; and four sisters, Mary Alberta McCollam, Lorraine McCollam Kittle, Betty Jean McCollam Lemieux and Donna McCollam Cochran.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ronald Carder and wife, Debbie, of Chesapeake, Virginia, Richard Carder and wife, Angela, of Franklin, North Carolina, Kenneth Comer of Elkins, West Virginia, Carolyn Comer Phares of Elkins, West Virginia, and Thomas Comer and wife, Rosalyn, of Gault, California.
Sisters and brothers surviving are Geraldine McCollam Rosencrance and husband, Eugene, Willis McCollam and wife, Linda, John McCollam and wife, Maxine, and Patricia McCollam Cohen, all of Elkins, West Virginia; and a brother, Donald McCollam of New York City, New York.
Her legacy continues with 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who affectionately called her Gran or Granny Jo, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School in the class of 1950 and worked at G.C. Murphy Company, The Dutch Oven Bakery, The Elkins Laundry and Nellie’s Nursing Home. She had been a homemaker for several years.
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers were her favorite teams, win or lose, she stayed with them. When it came to their children playing baseball and soccer, she and Carl were always there; even coaching them at times. Joan was a cancer survivor of many years and a member of The Mended Hearts Club.
In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society,122 South High Street, Morgantown, WV 26501 or the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 12110, Charleston, WV 25302.
A visitation will be held at the Tomblyn Funeral Home on Saturday, March 4, from 10 a.m. until noon.
A Celebration of Life service will follow immediately with Pastor Ann Fretwell officiating. Joan’s request for cremation was honored.
