Maxine N. Roy Varney, 80, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed from this life on Friday afternoon, Feb. 24, 2023, at Mansfield Place, peacefully and surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1942, in Elkins, West Virginia, to the late Mary Love Smith Roy and Lindsey Parker Roy.
She is survived by two daughters, Stefanie Varney and Melanie Pritt; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Varney; nine grandchildren, Misty Spicer, Ricky Martin (wife Molly), Tara Standridge, Amber Varney, Dustin Standridge (wife Emily) Amanda Standridge Knight (husband Jordan) Autumn Trupo, Caitlyn Varney (fiance Joe) and Alex Pritt. She also has 11 great-grandchildren, Noah, Lydia, Annie, Kylie, Kiera, Grace, Graisin, Arlen, Rhett, Lily and Tori; and several nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
Preceding her in death was her beloved "favorite" son and her "baby boy", Charles "Chuck" Varney; five brothers, Parker Lindsey Roy, Denver Lole Roy, Roger Phillip Roy, Randal Roy and Ronald Blake Roy; and one sister, Ruth Elaine Roy Jordan.
Maxine graduated from Elkins High School, class of 1960, while working for Neal's Drug Store. After high school she obtained a nursing degree and spent many years working in Nella's nursing home and Mon General Hospital. Following her career in healthcare, she became a certified daycare service provider, which she ran from her home, while helping to raise her grandchildren.
Maxine was simply a sweet, beautiful soul. She enjoyed a simple life, always with a positive attitude. She was a firecracker and never held back how she truly felt about something. She would drop everything to be there for her family, especially her kids and grandkids. They were her whole life. The love she had for all of her grandkids was beyond measure.
Maxine also loved to help the homeless or anyone in need. In her later years she loved just taking walks or heading downtown to socialize with friends and meet new people, going to see a live band, dancing or just to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mansfield Place, as well as Mountain Hospice for the professional, loving and attentive care that she received from their staff during her time there. It gave us much needed peace knowing that she was cared for with such compassion in her final days.
Maxine's request for cremation was honored.
Visitation with family and friends will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home Monday, March 6, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Mountain Hospice.
