Roy Edward White, departed this life on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 5:40 a.m. in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Roy was born on Dec. 27, 1945, in Hartner, Kansas, to the late Woodrow Aaron White and Alberta Mae Tavis White.
Married “Dee” Hartman White, Aug. 18, 1974, at Elkins, West Virginia. They had celebrated 48 years of marriage.
Left on this earth are Elizabeth Ray White Ferguson and husband, Jason Ferguson, of Bel Air, Maryland; and two precious grandsons, Tucker James Ferguson and Micah Jason Ferguson; sister-in-law, Lorrayne Hartman Corley and husband, Russell, of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
Roy was blessed with a wealth of friends.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was one brother, Ray Charles White.
Roy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, BPOE Elks Lodge 1135, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, was the Drum Major for the West Virginia Highlanders of D&E College and was a Boy Scout for many years.
Roy attended Elkins High School, graduating in 1964. His military service began with the WV Army National Guard. After an honorable discharge, he then joined the Navy. He became a Navy Corpsman and served on the front lines of Vietnam with the Marines, receiving a Purple Heart.
After his discharge, he became an ambulance driver for the first ambulance squad in Elkins.
After Roy and Dee were married, they moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia. Roy attended Shepherd College, graduating from the School of Nursing in 1976.
Returning to Elkins, he began his career as a nurse at work in many areas, ultimately becoming a nursing supervisor. The Memorial General Hospital and Davis Memorial Hospital merged in 1986. He worked briefly at DMH as a nursing supervisor.
In October 1986, Roy became a Nurse Administrator employed by Correctional Medical Services out of St. Louis, Missouri. Roy became the Medical Administrator at Huttonsville Correctional Center and all prisons in the state of West Virginia. Retiring from CMS in 2004, he began working with Appalachian Mental Health on home visits. During retirement, Roy also served as the Randolph County Coroner for many years before becoming a snow bird in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Roy had a scroll-saw talent with a craft business “Sawdust Leftovers.” Roy and Dee traveled to craft shows for six years, where Roy would actually saw while the shows were open using an antique pedal operated scroll saw. Roy suffered from COPD and had to stop sawing, which broke his heart.
Roy also had a gift of gab, telling wonderful stories and jokes. He enjoyed wandering with his walking stick and stopping to talk. Roy was tortured with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from Vietnam. He talked with many fellow veterans, others don’t understand.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.
Final Rites will be conducted from the funeral home, Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Brian Seders will officiate and interment will follow at the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale, West Virginia, where the U.S. Navy, the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
