Mr. Gary Lee Hartley Jr., 42, a resident of Belington, departed this life Monday evening, May 15, 2023, in the United Hospital Center at Bridgeport. Death was following a period of declining health.
He was born June 29, 1980, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of Gary Lee Hartley Sr. of Elkins and Kimberly Ann Cathell Summers and fiance, Danny O’Rear, of Belington. He had never married.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, April Dawne Rust Hartley and fiance, Ricky Allen Hanshaw, of the Arden community; one half-brother, Gary Lee Hartley Jr.; step-brother; Kevan O’Rear and wife, Amanda; step-sister, Maggie Benedette and companion, Leif Sayvetz; two nieces, Breanna Streets and Caitlyn Starkey; and nephew, Davin Rust. Additional survivors include aunts, Sharon Rubush and husband, Tim, and family, Linda Hartley and husband, Ronnie, and families, Carol Hartley and family and many aunts and uncles from the Summers family.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and a whole host of friends. If the family has missed anyone, we are truly sorry. Gary’s love of God and family will live on.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Ethel Cathell; maternal great-grandparents, John and Ginny Summerfield and Howard and Mary Monahan, Clifford and Stella Cathell and Milton and Gladys Hartley; great-grandparents, Clayton and Dolly Summers, Coy and Beatrice Davis, Frank and Marietta Hymes; grandma and grandpa Clark, his Texas grandma, Agnes Nell O’Rear; aunt, Rebecca Summers; and a half-sister, Nikki Sue Hartley.
Gary was a graduate of the Philip Barbour High School with the class of 2000 and was formerly employed with the Sheltered Workshop in Elkins. He was very involved with the Special Olympics in his earlier years.
He enjoyed watching The Dukes of Hazard and riding his bike. He loved and enjoyed music and had an amazing ability to duplicate music by hearing it one time and then playing it on his guitar. He also loved to sing along with Bon Jovi.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. and again on Friday, May 19, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor David Shelton officiating.
Interment will then follow in the Concord Cemetery.
