Laura ‘Janie’ Shobe

Laura “Janie” Shobe, 62, a resident of the Gilman Community, Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life early Sunday morning, July 23, 2023, at West Virginia Caring Hospice in Elkins, West Virginia. She had been in declining health following a three and a half year courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Saturday, Jan. 28, 1961, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Charles A. Shobe and N. Ruth Weaver Shobe. She had never married.

Surviving are one daughter, Emily Cecel Shobe of Elkins; two brothers, Charles Allen Shobe and wife, Patricia, of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Arley Dale Shobe of Elkins; four sisters, Catherine Rebecca Sturdivent of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Barbara Loraine McClung of Elkins, Margaret Kay Taylor and husband, Wade, of Elkins and Carolyn Sue Green of Parsons.

Preceding her in death by one brother, James Monroe Shobe; two nephews, Brian Michael Shobe, Cody Simmons; one great-nephew, Robert Paul Likens Jr.; two nieces, Faye Lea Likens and Janet Sue White; and her dog, Trixie.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1979, and attended Fairmont State College with a graphic design degree. She was employed by Elkins Industry and then for Seneca Design.

She was a member of the Orlena United Methodist Church. She enjoyed art and collecting roosters. Janie was a kind, compassionate and beautiful soul and a loving mother, sister, aunt and friend.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at noon. The Rev. Paul Thompson will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, West Virginia.
