Ruthlene Mallow Rhodes, 92, a former resident of Alpena, and a resident of French Creek, West Virginia, departed this life Sunday afternoon, July 2, 2023, at the WV Caring Hospice Center at Elkins, West Virginia, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Wednesday, September 24, 1930, at Onego, West Virginia, the oldest child of 18 children of the late Dayton and Eva Hedrick Mallow.
On April 10, 1952, at Glady, West Virginia, she was married to the Earl Cofer Rhodes, who preceded her in death. They had celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Surviving are four children, Roselea "Rose" Neely and husband, Kenny, of French Creek, Earl Tommy Rhodes and wife, Pattie, of Buckhannon, Jimmy Lloyd Rhodes and wife, Kathy, and Juanita Andrew, all of French Creek; four brothers, Dayton Junior Mallow and wife, Sandy, Hurman Lee Mallow, Paul Mallow and Jack Mallow, all of Elkins; four sisters, Emma Kathreen Phillips and husband, Robert Steven, of Beverly, Eva Jean Rhodes of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, Patty Jo Channels of Crystal Springs and Roseanna Everhart of Elkins; 13 grandchildren; 30 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are two sons, Clinton Dale Rhodes and wife, Connie, and infant Jackie Robert Rhoades; two brothers, Delmas Mallow and William Perry "Buck" Mallow and wife Eleanor Mae; and seven sisters, Marsie Mallow, Dolly Mae Nelson and husband, Junior, Marie "Nip" Poling, Barbara Mallow, Rhoda Mallow, Rheba Mallow and Gladys Louise Garden and husband, Gregory Lee.
She attended the school on Brush Run in Pendleton County for three or four years until her parents moved to Alpena, where she finished school, and then went to work at the I.O.O.F. Home at Elkins before she was married. After she was married, she and Earl moved to French Creek to make their home. She took care of elderly people in her community until she turned 80 when she stopped to get some rest. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, ride in the car and travel to new places, being with her family and her cats, farming cooking and baking. She was well known for making peanut butter cookies.
She was in church every Sunday and was a firm believer in the Bible.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, July 8, 2023, Mrs. Rhodes will be moved to the French Creek Methodist Church at French Creek, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour. Minister Mitch Griffin will officiate and interment will follow at the French Creek Memorial Gardens at French Creek, West Virginia.
