James Edward ‘Jim’ Smith
James Edward “Jim” Smith of Helvetia, West Virginia, peacefully passed away at his home on Aug. 5, 2023, at the age of 90.
Jim was born at Czar, West Virginia, on Dec. 19, 1932, to the late Clark and Delia Smith. He was a graduate of Pickens High School, served in the United States Army and was a member and elder of the Helvetia Zion Presbyterian Church.
Jim worked as a coal miner and a timberman, which was his true passion.
His passing follows those of his loving wife of 65 years, Vada Jane Betler Smith; son, Clark Owen Smith; grandson, Kenneth Keith Spittler; great-granddaughter, Sidney Nicole Dodson; and two sisters, Doris Morgan and Lena Sneberger.
Left to cherish his memories are six children, Deborah Ellen McNeal of Charleston West Virginia, Rebecca Louise Spittler of Helvetia West Virginia, Talbot Cedric Smith of Surveyor, West Virginia, James Michael Smith of Valley Bend, West Virginia, Iris Jane Davis of Spring Hope, North Carolina, Russell Betler Smith of Hava de Grace, Maryland; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Jim’s request for cremation was honored. An evening graveside service was held Wednesday, Aug. 9, in Pine Grove Cemetery in Czar officiated by Rev. Randy Long.
The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for James Edward Smith.
