Josephine Virgie Taylor Bland

Josephine Virgie Taylor Bland, 98, a former resident of Kerens and more recently a resident of Mars Hill, North Carolina, passed from this life Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at WV Caring Hospice Inpatient Center.

Josephine was born Sunday, June 7, 1925, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Leslie “Joe” Taylor and Orpha Virgie Harper Taylor.

She was married to Robert “Hansel” Bland, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Left to cherish Josephine’s memory is one daughter, Carolyn “Kay” Compagnucci and husband, Fred, of Mars Hill, North Carolina; a step-son, Danny Lee Bland and wife, Trina, of Tuxedo, New York; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; great- great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and an especially close niece, Debbie Chenoweth and husband, Allen, of Elkins.

Josephine was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by eight siblings.

Josephine was a graduate of Elkins High School. She and her husband, Hansel, owned and operated several businesses over the years, including a bowling alley and a taxi service. She was an avid reader, seamstress, and cook. She enjoyed volunteer work from helping the Leading Creek Fire Department, working in thrift shops and volunteering at a children’s hospital in Florida.

She was a member of the Israel Church at Kerens.

A visitation will be held at Randolph Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., the funeral hour. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Josephine Virgie Taylor Bland.
