Walter Thomas ‘Tom’ Cooper

Walter Thomas “Tom” Cooper, 89, a resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, in the Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown, West Virginia.

He was born June 11, 1934, at Pocahontas County, West Virginia, a son of the late Walter Ellis Cooper and Martha Elizabeth Tharp Cooper.

On Jan. 24, 1958, at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins, he was married to Flora Ann McGee Cooper, who preceded him in death.

Tom is survived by one son, Walter Thomas Cooper II and wife, Teresa “Terri” McCloud, of Elkins; one brother, Dayton Ellis Cooper and wife, Patty, of Morgantown; one sister, Joyce Cooper Moore and husband, Bob, of Morgantown; one brother-in-law, William “Bill” Hartman of Elkins; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Mary Cooper Hartman, Doris Woods Brown and Josephine Cooper Kelly; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Kelly and Bob Brown.

Tom was a veteran of Battery A, 1st Battalion 201st West Virginia National Guard serving for 31 years prior to his retirement. He was an instructor at the Randolph Technical Center teaching Auto Body repair for many years.

He was a member of Elks Lodge No 1135, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.

A committal service will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, in the mausoleum at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Rev. Stella Faye Moyer will officiate and Military Honors will be accorded by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program. Entombment will follow.

The family request flowers be omitted and contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Tom.
