Edna Mae Howell Wood

Edna Mae Howell Wood, 94, a resident of Valley Head, passed from this life Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at home surrounded by family and under the care of West Virginia Caring.

Edna Mae was born May 25, 1929, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Edward Edmond Howell and Stella Kisner Howell.

On March 22, 1954, at the Washington Cathedral in Washington, D.C., she married Maynard Newton Wood, who preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1996.

Left to cherish her memory is one daughter, Deborah Wood Demyan and husband, Frank, of Huttonsville, three grandchildren, Timothy “Kip” Matthew and wife, Nicole Armstrong Matthew, of Valley Head, Katelyn Rae Demyan Harris and husband, Alex, of Dallas, Texas, and Steven Michael Demyan of Knoxville, Tennessee; four great-grandchildren, Leila Matthew Lansberry and husband, CJ, Tracey Matthew, Jay Matthew and Lexi Harris; and three great-great-grandchildren, Bransen, Alivia and Creed Lansberry.

Preceding Edna in death besides her parents and husband was her son, Maynard Douglas Wood; and two sisters, Dorothy Hudgins and Peggy Gregory.

Edna was a graduate of Elkins High School and Parkersburg Community College. She was the founder and director of the Valley Head Public Library, providing programs and guidance to the children of the community for forty plus years. She was a member of the Eastern Star and attended Valley Head Methodist Church. Spending time at the farm with her family is what Edna loved the most.

Services are complete and interment followed in Ware’s Ridge Cemetery in Valley Head.
