Jacquelyn "Jackie" Cupp Fletcher departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 at her home.
Jacquelyn was born on Nov. 17, 1936, in Elkins, West Virginia, to the late Harry H. Cupp Jr. and Gwendolyn Davis Cupp.
She was married to the late David E. Fletcher Jr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 2015.
She is survived by one brother, Phillip F. Cupp and wife, Jaime, of Elkins; one sister, Norma Joan Pitzer of Atlanta, Georgia; and one sister-in-law, Mina Cupp of Elkins. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Beth Ann Pitzer of Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Pitzer of Tampa, Florida, Charles Pitzer of San Jose, California; Phillip Cupp II /Sara of Sammamish, Washington, Brandi Cupp of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Courtney Cupp Ranson/Jason of Morgantown, West Virginia, Grant Cupp/Jeffrey Stebbins of Atlanta, Georgia, Brice Cupp/Aimee of Morgantown, West Virginia. Harry Cupp, IV/Amelia of Elkins, West Virginia, and Dr. Matthew Cupp/Melanie both of Elkins, West Virginia; Jennifer Fletcher Ruddle/Chris and Jo Hannah Fletcher Ruddle/Walter of Annapolis, Maryland. Several great nephews and nieces also survive.
A special mention to George "Rick" Marfield, her trusted close friend and colleague of 35 years and Barbara Zickefoose another dear and close friend of many years.
Also preceding her in death was one brother, Harry "Bud" Cupp III; brothers-in-law, Chuck Pitzer, Charles Fletcher, Jim Fletcher and Joe Ruddle; and three sisters-in-law, Betty Ruddle, Patty and Sarah Fletcher.
Mrs. Fletcher was a legend in her field as she was educated in some of the finest design schools in the country. She attended Greenbrier Women's College in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where she obtained a Business Degree. She continued her education at RPI (now VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. From there she enrolled at the International Design Studio in Washington, D.C.. The studio was accredited by additional studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design. Her designing spread far and wide throughout West Virginia, Virginia, Michigan, New York and Florida as she was known for her unique designs and wonderful rapport with people.
In the 1980s, Mrs. Fletcher was instrumental in restoring the Halliehurst and Graceland mansions on the Davis & Elkins College campus. Her work on these projects continued until 1994. Mrs. Fletcher was hailed and recognized by Southern Living Magazine, the Washington Post and the Charleston Gazette for her distinctive restorations of these mansions.
Jackie and Dave Fletcher spent their winters in Florida and their summers in West Virginia. They returned home to Elkins in 2002. Mrs. Fletcher was associated with her family business, Cupp's Furniture, the majority of her life. An establishment her father built and which still remains under the ownership and management of Phillip F. Cupp and Jamie McGee Cupp after 87 years.
She was an avid china painter, a great story teller of life experiences and a wonderful friend to those who knew her. Her greatest love were her pets, of which she had more than 28 throughout her lifetime that she loved and cherished dearly. She and her husband were both loving and caring people for those in need. She leaves this earth in the hopes she will be remembered for her loving heart that she showed to the many people that loved her.
Mrs. Fletcher has requested to be cremated, as she felt funerals were too hard for her family and friends.
Her parting words were, "Just remember me as you knew me on this earth!"
We know that Jackie touched many lives. She was well loved and will be missed by many. In lieu of a funeral service, there will be a celebration of life event. Details regarding the date and time will be forthcoming.
