Kenneth Ray ‘Kenny’ Phillips

Mr. Kenneth Ray “Kenny” Phillips, 67, a resident of Belington, the Stringtown Community, departed this life early Saturday morning, Sept. 9, 2023, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 29, 1956, at Philippi, West Virginia, a son of the late Edgar Newton and Alice Christina Wilt Phillips Flanagan.

On May 18, 1983, he was united in marriage to the former Marie Ellen Schoonover, who survives at their home in Belington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Marie Sibley and husband, Joe, of Austin, Texas, and Valarie Cross and husband, Craig, of Belington; and three grandchildren, Danielle Marie Cross, Malachi Daniel Cross and Abigail Rayanne Cross.

Additional survivors include three brothers, Larry “Squeak” Phillips and wife, Donna, of Belington, Michael Joseph Phillips of Belington and Thomas Howard “Jake” Phillips and companion, Debbie, of Belington; two sisters, Anita Catherine Phillips of Belington and Rebecca Shaffer and husband, Kevin, of Aurora, West Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-father, Herbert “Bud” Flanagan.

Kenny was a 1974 graduate of the Philip Barbour High School, and was retired from the Barbour County School system as a bus driver after 19 years of service. He was a former Little League baseball coach, a former Jerry West basketball coach and a former Lady’s softball coach, where he touched lives of many of the youth in the Belington area. Kenny was a meticulous wood worker, making furniture and various of wood-made items. He most definitely was a master at his craft. He attended the Light of Christ Chapel in Belington, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received from the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N Brandenburg Street in Belington, on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and again on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmie E. Tallman officiating. Per Kenny’s request cremation will then follow and the final disposition of his cremains will be at a later date.
