Mr. Kevin William McKinnie, 61, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday evening, Sept. 27, 2023, at Davis Medical Center in Elkins. Death was following a period of declining health.
He was born Feb. 17, 1962, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late William Palmer McKinnie and Deloris Sharon Golden, who survives in Elkins.
He was united in marriage to the former Michelle Lucinda Mullenax on Sept. 23, 2000.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two children, Richard Colby McKinnie and wife, Amelia, of Oakland, Maryland, and Taylor Delain McKinnie of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Kimberly McKinnie of Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Deirdre McKinnie of Waynesboro, Virginia; and grandchildren, Keaton McKinnie and Warren McKinnie.
Additional survivors include his former wife, Sarah Beth Schwartz of Thomas; and his life-long friends that he considered brothers, Stanley Fitzwater, Greg Tucker, Curtis Bodkins and the late Rick McLean.
Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Kevin was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School with the class of 1981, lettering in baseball, football, basketball and track. He attended Alderson Broaddus College, where he played baseball and majored in Architectural Engineering. At one time he had the highest batting average in the state, while playing baseball for Philip Barbour High. He won the State Proficiency contest, receiving his certification at the Greenbrier Resort, which started his career as a chef. He managed and/or was head chef at various restaurants throughout the area, including Snowshoe and Canaan Valley Resort. He was also formerly the catering director at D&E College. Kevin loved golfing, mountain biking, skiing, and hunting and fishing with his buddies. He started the Pond Lick Mountain Hunting Club, where he loved to be with his friends. Kevin and his family moved back from California when he was a child but he always felt that Barbour County was home. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Per Kevin's request, cremation will be honored.
The family would like to invite friends and family for a celebration of his life at the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg Street, on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Philip Barbour Athletics: attention Tammy Zimmerman 99 Horseshoe Drive Philippi, WV 26416.
