Michael John Phillips

PHILLIPS

On Sept. 12, 2023, at 8:57 a.m., our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, Michael John Phillips, 74, completed his life’s journey and went to be with the Lord.

At the time of his passing, Michael was receiving care through WV Caring. He was a life-long resident of Elkins, West Virginia.

He was born Oct. 26, 1948, in Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Corder Phillips Jr. and Opal E. Myers Phillips.

On July 13, 1974, in Elkins, West Virginia, he was married to Kit Leyland.

Surviving are two sons, Michael John Phillips II (Christina) of Richmond, Kentucky, and Christopher Daniel Phillips (Ryann) of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Also surviving are one brother, Bradley Dean Phillips (Debby); and two grandchildren, Leyland Elizabeth Phillips and Parker Michael Phillips.

In addition, there are nine nieces and nephews, Thomas Helmick (Kim), Lorri Sobel (Charles), Mathew Helmick, John Wesley White III, Mason Cereo (Bethany), Bradley Allen Phillips (Megan), Andrew E. Phillips (Berea), William E Morgan (Linda) and Laura C. Morgan.

Michael is also survived by many cousins; and three special great-nephews, Edward Morgan (Lainey), William Morgan and Corder Helmick.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Judith Louise Phillips Helmick and Melodee Kay Phillips White.

He attended Randolph County Schools and graduated from Elkins High School with the class of 1967, where he was a member of the 1967 AAA state semi-finalist basketball team. He continued his education and basketball career at West Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity, graduating in 1971 with a degree in business and economics.

Michael loved all children, especially his grandchildren, Leyland and Parker, speaking often about their academic and athletic achievements.

Michael was a member of the First Church of Christ where he served as a past Deacon, Board Member and Sunday School Teacher.

He retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways after 38 years of service.

Michael was a current member of BPO Elks 1135. He was also a former member of The International Right of Way Association and Elkins Rotary. Lastly, he devoted many years to community service by officiating area football games, coaching Little League baseball, serving as a Webelos and explorer troop leader and donated time to the Cub Scout Day Camp.

On Oct. 2, the family will receive friends and relatives from 10 a.m. till noon at The First Church of Christ, 300 Main Street, Elkins, WV 26241.

A celebration of life will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to The First Church of Christ, 300 Main Street, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Michael.
