Neil Nolan "Springer" Young, an active community member and friend to all, passed away on Sept. 28, 2023, at the age of 77.
His departure leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends even as they celebrate him and a life well lived.
Born on Dec. 17, 1946, in Elkins, West Virginia, Neil Young was a prolific outdoorsman, who joined the Boy Scouts at a young age.
Under President Eisenhower, he was selected to travel by train from Clarksburg, West Virginia, to the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado. He furthered his scouting by joining the "Order of the Arrow" and also became active in 4H.
Neil proudly served his country when called, being drafted into the U.S. Army in the late 1960s. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to WV and earned a BA in psychology from Fairmont State University. He would finish his academic pursuits at West Virginia University, garnering an MA in Early Childhood Education.
Upon returning to Elkins, "Springer" met the love of his life, Sestilia Kay Young, a young nursing student at the time.
A known motorcycle enthusiast, his friends noted that he was no longer riding solo and now had a beautiful woman on the back of his bike. The two were soon married and settled in Elkins to begin a family.
Neil was a dedicated family man and a loving father.
He is survived by his wife, Sestilia Kay Young, of Montrose; son, Ko Cha' Ta Seth Young, of Elkins; daughter, Justine Beth Bender; son-in-law, Craig Allen Bender; grandchildren, Jacob Allen Bender and Madison Grace Bender, of Coalton; and sister, Linda Anne Young of Elkins.
He was preceded by his father, Henry Paul Young, of French Creek; and his mother, Georgianna Marie Young of Parsons.
Many will deeply miss Neil, as he was well known for his ability to positively impact those around him. He leaves a legacy of loving, giving, and brightening every room he entered. He finished his days at his beloved homestead near Montrose, where he and his wife Kay lived a quiet life interrupted occasionally by ruckus homesteading adventures.
A visitation service for Neil Young will be held at Tomblyn Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The funeral service will begin at Tomblyn Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m.
Cindy Morgan-Roberts will officiate.
The funeral service will be followed by a graveside ceremony at Little Arlington Ceremony in Cravensdale, with full military rights honored, and a potluck meal and celebration of life will follow. Everyone is welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to warriorsinthefield.org in his honor.
