Ronald David "Buster" Schoonover Sr., 95, a lifelong resident of Chenoweth Creek Road in Elkins, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023.
Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Elkins, he was the eldest of 11 children of the late Ernest Robert and Dorothy Triplett Schoonover.
On Nov. 17, 1956, he married the former Belvia Bernice Bennett, who proceeded him in death in 1994.
Surviving are his three children, Ron Schoonover II (Karen), Kathy Hamrick and Pam Schoonover (Rick Howard); five grandchildren, Cierra Hart (Andrew Nichols), Adam Hart (Keyla), Ainslee Wead (Alex), Heidi Bray (C.J.), and Ron Schoonover III (Kristen); and one very special grandson, Levi Nichols.
Also surviving are sisters, Ilene Hedrick (Roy), Ailene Chenoweth, Dortha Jean Hensil, Reta Chaput, and Mary Ann Evans; sister-in-law, Anita Schoonover, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his son-in-law, Danny Hamrick; brothers, Robert, Samuel and Ernest "Pete"; sisters, Martha McKinney and Betty Arbuthnot; brothers-in-law, Jerome Arbuthnot, Grant Arbuthnot, Charles Chenoweth, Maurice Chaput, Robert McKinney and Edgar Evans; sister-in-law, Betty Schoonover; niece, Andrea McKinney; and nephew, Jason Chenoweth.
Ronald attended the schools of Randolph County before becoming a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Ohio Department of Highways, several local lumbers companies, Western Maryland Railway and retired from CSX.
In his younger years, Buster helped on the family farm and helped operate the Schoonover Sawmill. He enjoyed raising a garden, family picnics, traveling the backroads of West Virginia, hunting, riding four wheelers, tinkering, watching tv ministries and spending time with his great-grandson.
He attended Hart Chapel Community Church as well as other churches over the years. Ronald was a devout Christian by faith.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, from the funeral home chapel, with Judy Schoonover Ritchie officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
