Sterling Wallace Yeager

YEAGER

Sterling Wallace Yeager, 94, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, passed away early Wednesday morning, Nov. 22, 2023, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living in Elkins, West Virginia, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

He was born Tuesday, Jan. 22, 1929, at Belington, West Virginia, a son of the late Myron Bernard Yeager and Ethel Pearl England Yeager.

On June 17, 1949, he was married to the former Zelma Pearle Proudfoot, who preceded him in death Jan. 8, 2018. They had celebrated 68 years or marriage.

Left to cherish his memory are three sons, Steven Wallace Yeager and wife, Susie, of Lewisburg, John Arthur Yeager and wife, Amy, of Elkins, and Jerry Lynn Yeager and wife, Angie, of Beverly; six grandchildren, Colleen, Michael and wife, Kristy, Stephanie, Katelyn and husband, Aaron, Jared and wife, Cassie, and Chelsea; seven great-grandchildren, Madison, Whitaker, Emily, Kyndall, Mason, Brady, and Henry; and many nieces and nephews.

Sterling was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Sparkman Yeager, Milford Yeager and Glen Yeager.

Sterling was a graduate of Belington High School with the class of 1946. He was a member of the United States Air Force, where he trained to be a Meteorologist. He then went to work for the federal government as a meteorologist in Lynchburg, Virginia, and later in Elkins, West Virginia.

He was heard on the local radio station in Elkins for many years providing the local forecast. He was a member and trustee of Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church. He enjoyed watching sports of any kind.

He was a very kind and patient person who had a great love for his family, always willing to lend a helping hand. He planted a big garden every year and enjoyed sharing with family, church friends and neighbors. He was a past member of the Kiwanis and the American Legion Post 29.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins, West Virginia, on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home on Saturday at noon. Pastor Jeremiah A. Jasper will officiate and interment will follow at Mt. State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, West Virginia.
