Lloyd Teter Jr., 96, a lifelong resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, at Mountain Memories in Elkins.
Born in Elkins, West Virginia, on Dec. 13, 1927, he was the son of the late Lloyd S. Teter Sr. and Elizabeth (Stuiber) Teter.
He is survived by his second wife, Sharon (Burgess) Teter, to whom he was married on April 11, 1998; and by the seven children of his marriage to the late Eleanor (Rice) Teter, Gerald (Jerry) Lee Teter and wife, Susie, of Elkins, and her children and grandchildren; Donald (Don) Teter and wife, Debbie, of Monterville, West Virginia, James (Jim) Keith Teter of Valley Bend, West Virginia, Charles Alan Teter and wife, Sue, of Elkins, Vicki Sue Petronio and husband, Joe, of Orlando, Florida, Kenneth Scott Teter and wife, Amy, of Washington, West Virginia, and Gregory (Greg) Douglas Teter, of Beverly; and a brother, Roger D. Teter and wife, Jean, of Sunnyvale, California.
Also surviving are grandson, Andy Teter and his wife, Manda, and their children Evan, Karissa and Kaylie; granddaughter, Kendra Teter Cross, and husband, Chad, and their son Kole; grandson, Brad Teter and his wife, Jackie, and their daughter Lindsey; granddaughter, Melissa Teter; granddaughter, Brandi Jo Petronio Nyberg, and her husband, Dale, and their son Wrangel; grandson, Joey Petronio; granddaughter, Allison Teter Wolf and her husband, Chris, and their children, Claire, Kate and Conner; grandson, Douglas Teter; granddaughter, Rachel Teter Coble and her husband, Rockford; granddaughter, Shay Teter; and granddaughter, Larel Teter and her wife Brodi; and by step-grandson, Adam Williams, and his son, Tyler Ray.
Also surviving are stepson, Vincent Mullenax and wife, Kate, and their children Ethan, Jessie, Cathryn, and Ashton; stepdaughter Chrissy Mullenax Kittle and her husband, Matthew, and their children, Sydney Hammond, Mateah, Hallie and Dahlton; and stepdaughter, Missy Mullenax Kilgore, her husband, Brian, and their sons, Alex McGee and Wil Kilgore.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor (Rice) Teter, with whom he had celebrated 48 years of marriage before she passed away on Feb. 14, 1997; by a brother, H. Keith Teter; by an infant grandson, Michael Petronio; by daughters-in-law, Barbara (Greg) Teter and Marsha (Jim) Teter; and by step-great grandson, Brandon Williams.
He served briefly in the United States Navy, and when the military was downsizing following World War II, he was Honorably Discharged as an Apprentice Seaman after completing basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, in July, 1946.
While still in high school, he had begun working for his father in what soon became Teter Motors, and from 1948 spent the rest of his career working in the family business, taking over sole ownership when his father Lloyd Sr., retired in about 1981. The GMC, Pontiac and Buick dealership, which built its reputation for taking care of their customers with the slogan "Service is our thing at Teter Motors," was sold in 2006 after 62 years in business, and he entered semi-retirement.
Always active in the community, he was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins, the Elkins Rotary Club, and the Elks, as well as being a member of the Tygart Valley Shrine Club and a Master Mason in Elkins Lodge Number 108 AF & AM. As a member of the Jaycees and later with other groups, he helped establish the Randolph County tradition of chicken barbecues, with a recipe that is still used in the family and community.
Lloyd enjoyed outdoor activities, and for over 50 years was especially fond of trips to the Rice-Teter tin camp in Canaan Valley. Each fall he made sure to have a couple of four-wheel drive trucks available for the annual muddy and adventurous deer season trek to that dirt-floored palace, and well into his 90's continued the family hunting tradition at the rustic Stagger Knob camp on the flanks of Point Mountain, where he also enjoyed numerous overnight excursions with his wife, Sharon.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
On Thursday, Dec. 21, he will be moved to the First United Methodist Church in Elkins, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.
Rev. Brian L. Seders and Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, PA 16505 or to First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Lloyd.
