Russell William "Speedy" Valentine, 81, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at Nella's at Autumn Lake Healthcare.
Speedy was born Thursday, Jan. 8, 1942, in Elkins, a son of the late Woodrow Valentine Sr. and Mary Virginia Weese Valentine.
On Dec. 24, 1970, he married the former Yvonne Armstrong, who preceded him in death.
Left to cherish his memory are children, Candy Lanham and companion, Steve Channell, of Belington, Kathryn Channell/Ralph Channell of Beverly and Susan Serrett/Larry Serrett of Mill Creek; grandchildren, Perry "PJ" Lanham/Bernadine of Shreve Ohio, Rodney Channell/Natalie Mills of Port Matilda Pennsylvania, Brad Channell/Jodie Channell of Elkins, Robbie "Doodle" Serrett of Valley Bend, Melodee "Cissy" Serrett of Charleston and Melissa "Missy" Lanham/ Johnny Lanham of Mill Creek; grandchild-in-law, Amanda Channell of Manteo North Carolina; several great-grandchildren; and siblings, Shirley Bee of New Franklin Ohio, Jack Valentine and Nancy Barlow Valentine, both of Elkins; and life-long friend, Dave Hinchman of Ohio.
Preceding him in death were grandchild, Ernie Channell of Manteo, North Carolina; siblings, "Dump" Valentine and Virginia "Susie" Beverage; and lifelong friends, Hobe and Lesa Koontz.
Russell had worked at Wimpy's Pool Room as a bartender and cook for many years and made the "famous Wimpy's Chili" for the hot dogs. He was employed at Elkins Industries as a furniture paint sprayer.
Russell also worked for the City of Elkins as a custodian for City Hall as well as for Parks and Recreation and retired from there.
He was a dedicated husband and father. He loved to mow yards for the residents in the area, about 15 yards a week. Russell walked daily visiting the various local businesses during his walk, particularly the Elkins Inter-Mountain, where he always took the time to stop and chat with the ladies in the main office. He was a resident at Nella's at Autumn Lake Healthcare for the last six months and was fortunate to get to roommate with a friend from his childhood days, "Roy Hedrick." They enjoyed each other's company and looked after each other watching the old TV shows all day and reminiscing about the good old days, referred to each other as "Pap and Pop." While married to Yvonne, they enjoyed life and going out to different organizations to socialize and dance such as the Red Mans Club, Moose Club, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles and VFW.
Russell's request for cremation was honored.
The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Russell William "Speedy" Valentine.
