Catherine S. "Cathy" Kalar, 68, a resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living & Retirement Center under the care of West Virginia Caring Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 20, 1955, in Elkins, a daughter of the late James Lee Gainer and the late Martha Lee Ward Gainer.
She was married to Ilee N. Kalar for years prior to him preceding her in death on Nov. 27, 2018.
Surviving is one son, Brian David Kalar and wife, Mycha, of Morgantown; and one daughter, Janel Kalar Martin and husband, Ian of Elkins. She is survived by a sister, Janice Minutelli of Fairmont; two brothers, Jim Gainer (Marisa) of Elkins, and Kenny Gainer (Dawn) of Wheeling; and many nieces and nephews. Four beloved grandsons, Kobe Lincoln Kalar, Bowen Kash Kalar, Sullivan Lee Martin, and Clay Harrison Martin also survive.
Also preceding her in death in addition to her parents and husband was one sister, Sherry Cunningham.
Cathy was employed by Davis Health System for decades and served as the CFO of Broaddus Hospital prior to her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkins for her entire life, where she served on many boards, played piano and taught Sunday School.
She adored her grandsons and cherished spending time with them.
Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Brett Rinehart and Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins.
