Mr. Donald Ray "Donnie" Coontz, 84, a resident of Belington, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, in the Stonehaven Care Facility at Belington. Death had been following a period of declining health.
He was born June 27, 1939, at Belington, a son of the late Eugene Weldon "Gene" and Edna Virginia Skidmore Coontz.
On May 11, 1957, he was united in marriage to the former Garnet Mae Pingley, who preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 2019.
Left to cherish his memory is one son, Kevin Coontz of Belington and companion, Teresa Vance, of Dry Fork; two daughters, Misty Bennett and husband, Jeff, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, and Sheila Haddix and husband, Kirk, of Longview Texas; one brother, James W. "Jimmy" Coontz and wife, Jeanie, of Belington, West Virginia; and one sister, Elizabeth A. "Libby" Weese of Washington, Pennsylvania.
Additional survivors include five grandchildren, Jason Haddix and wife, Sarah, of Texas, Brittany Rae Scott and husband, Jason, of Fairmont, Hanna Kay McClung and fiance, K.J. Nadeau, of Morgantown, Brandon Bennett of Buckhannon and Alexa Bennett of Morgantown; and seven great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Bryson, Landrey, Luke and Lindsey Haddix, Brayden, and Addison Scott.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his wife and parents, Donnie was preceded in death by one brother, William L. "Bill" Coontz; and one sister, Barbara Jean McQuain.
Donnie attended the schools of Barbour County; he was a Christian by faith and lastly attended the Light of Christ Chapel in Belington. He was previously employed as a heavy equipment mechanic and was a member of the Local 132 International Union Operating Engineers for sixty-five years. He was also a 59-year member of the Belington Masonic Lodge 125 AF & AM, and the Shriners Osiris Temple in Wheeling. He loved his cocker-spaniels and had a great love for work and he always took pride in his property. Most of all he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington, on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m. at which time final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmie E. Tallman officiating.
On Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, there will be a private family ceremony held at the Sugar Creek Cemetery near Belington, where the Belington Masonic Lodge 125 will conduct the Masonic Burial Rite.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Animal Friends of Barbour County P.O. Box 452 Philippi, WV 26416.
