Jane Hamrick Barb

Jane Hamrick Barb, 90, a resident of Parsons, West Virginia, departed this life Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living at Elkins, West Virginia.

She was born Sunday, July 16, 1933, on Miller Mountain, Webster County, West Virginia, on the hottest day that God ever created, according to her mother. She was the daughter of the late Grover C. and Fuda Groves Hamrick.

On Dec. 12, 1952, she was married to Howard Nick Barb, who preceded her in death May 7, 1981.

Surviving are her children, Jeffrey A. Barb of Elkins, Sidnee A. Barb of Alabama and Riley H. Barb and wife, Amy, of Canaan Valley; three grandchildren, Bethany Miller and husband, Fred, of Alabama, Hugh Nicholas "Nick" Barb and wife, Courtney, of Parsons, and Charlee Barb and Tommy McGuire of Lost Creek; six great-grandchildren, Luke, Beau and Jack Barb, Rylee Miller and Wylder Sage and Jude McGuire.

Preceding her in death is one grandson, Jeffrey "Adam" Barb.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1951 and attended nursing school at West Virginia University. She served as Magistrate of Tucker County from 1977 and retiring in 2001, serving 24 years. She served as senior status magistrate from 2001 to 2008 and was one of the original founders of the West Virginia Magistrates Association. She was President of the former Barb's Drug Store and co-owner of the former Old Town Shoppe in Parsons and Davis.

In 1991, she received the public employee award and in 1993, she received the award "Tuckineer." She was the first female president of the Tucker County Chamber of Commerce, the first female member and president of Parsons Kiwanis, past president of the Mountaineer Garden Club, County Chairman of TIRE (flood recovery). She was a 50 plus member of the Parsons Chapter 91 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Parsons.

Jane enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband and children when they were younger, playing cards and dancing. Her door was always open for a cup of coffee and hours of conversation around her kitchen table.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons, West Virginia, on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 1 p.m. The Reverend Kevin Keplinger will officiate, and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, West Virginia.
