Barbara "Barb" Jo Rhodes Lawrence, 80, a resident of Dry Fork, West Virginia, departed this life early Thursday morning, Feb. 1, 2024, at the WV Caring Hospice Center at Elkins, West Virginia. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to COPD.
Barb was born Friday, Dec. 17, 1943, at Glady, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James Isaac "Jim" and Bethel Mae Vance Rhodes of Glady.
On March 2, 1959, at Rawlings, Maryland, she was married to the love of her life, James Alva "Jamie" Lawrence, who survives in Dry Fork. They had celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Left to cherish her memory are three children, James Michael "Mike" Lawrence and wife, Laurella, of Elkins, Alesia Ann Kesling and husband, Robert "Rob," of Beverly, and Sandra Lee Bland of Dry Fork; siblings, Jerry Rhodes and wife, Sandy, of Glady, Shirley Thompson of Beverly and Charlotte Pennington and husband, George, of Harman; sisters-in-law, Linda Rhodes and Evelyn Rhodes, both of Glady; six grandchildren, Chase Bland and wife, Julie, of Davis, Macey Bland of Dry Fork, Trenton Mullennex of Dry Fork, April Kesling Layman and husband, Ryan, of Texas City, Texas, Jeff Shifflett of Elkins and Heather Stockinger of High Point, North Carolina; three great-granddaughters, Kailey Shifflett of Morgantown, Amyah Harris of High Point, North Carolina, and Lilly Bland of Davis.
Preceding her in death were her brothers, Edward Rhodes and Bill Rhodes; sister, Bonnie Bodkins; and brothers-in-law, Lapel Bodkins and Tom Thompson.
She attended the schools of Randolph County. While living in Baltimore she had worked at Westinghouse and General Electric for many years. Many people will remember Barb's smiling face at Canaan Valley Resort, where she worked for over 40 years as a cook and various other capacities. She was a member of the Dry Fork Assembly of God. Barb enjoyed fishing and puzzle books. She loved cooking and baking, was a wonderful wife, mother and MawMaw who will be greatly missed.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of WV Caring for the special loving care given to Barb.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday.
On Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, Barb will be moved to the Dry Fork Assembly of God at Dry Fork, West Virginia, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour.
Pastor Bob Yothers will officiate and interment will follow at the Bonner Mountain Cemetery at Dry Fork, West Virginia.
