Delma Virginia (Wagner) Thompson

Mrs. Delma Virginia (Wagner) Thompson, 92, formerly a resident of Belington and more recently of the Pleasant Acres Christian Haven Nursing Facility at Fairmont, departed this life Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, in the care facility. Death was following a period of declining health.

She was born Sept. 24, 1931, at the Mt. Liberty Community, Barbour County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Delbert and Cora (Booth) Wagner.

On June 14, 1952, she was united in marriage to Robert Lynn "Bob" Thompson, who preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 2009.

Left to cherish her memory, a daughter Debra Lynn "Debbie" Ross of Philippi; one sister, Doretta Holbert and husband, Ronnie, of Bridgeport; granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Runion and husband, Chris, of Philippi; grandson, Mitchell David Ross and wife, Jennifer, of Morgantown; and three great-grandchildren, Logan, Nathan and Lauren Ross.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Neva Poynter and Ruby Wagner; one brother, Russell Wagner; and a son-in-law, David Ross.

Mrs. Thompson attended the schools of Barbour County and was a graduate from the Philippi High School with the class of 1949. Upon graduation, she attended the Fairmont State College from where she received her Teaching Certificate and received her masters plus 15 from West Virginia University. Mrs. Thompson was a teacher in the Barbour County School System from 1951-1988 from which she retired. She was proud of the fact that she was one of the last teachers living that still taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She was a member of the Barbour Church of Christ, she also belonged to the Barbour Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid reader and she loved Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball. She formerly volunteered for Mountain Hospice and in her younger years she loved to decorate cakes and sew. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends were received at the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington, on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, and again on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, from 8-11 a.m., the funeral hour, at which time final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with her nephew, Danny Wagner, officiating. Interment will then follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Acres Christian Haven 41 Pleasant Acre Drive, Fairmont WV 26554.
