Elmer "Lee" Phares, 75, a resident of East Dailey, passed from this life Feb. 18, 2024, at WV Caring Hospice Inpatient Center surrounded by his wife, children, sister and all of his grandchildren. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Elmer was born Thursday, April 8, 1948, in Elkins, a son of the late George and Rose Cross Phares.
On Sept. 27, 1969, in Mill Creek, he was married to the former Phyllis Ann Bennett, who survives. They had celebrated 54 years of marriage.
Also left to cherish Elmer's memory are three children, Patrick Phares of East Dailey, Sean Phares and wife, Ronni, of Mill Creek, and Megan Evans and husband, Daniel, of Hurricane; five grandchildren, Emma Rose Phares, Aiden Phares, Avery Phares, Kilian Evans and Atlas Evans; a sister, Sandy Arbogast and husband, John; one niece, Laura Arbogast; and one nephew, Chad Arbogast.
Preceding Elmer in death was one nephew, Adam Arbogast.
Elmer was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and West Virginia University and he had served four years in the United States Navy. He retired from the United States Government, having worked in the Social Security Administration and spending the last several years as the manager of the Elkins office.
Elmer volunteered for many years with the Committee on Aging, having served multiple terms as president. He was member of the Royal Arch Masons and the Tygarts Valley Shrine Club where he had also served as president. He was an avid Sportsman and enjoyed playing slow pitch softball in several area leagues.
After his retirement, his favorite past time was golf.
Elmer's request for cremation will be honored.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Randolph Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., at which time members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Naval Honor Guard.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made in Elmer's honor to WV Caring Hospice Center, 169 Diamond St. Elkins, WV 26241 or to the Shriners at www.lovetotherescue.org.
The Randolph Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Elmer "Lee" Phares.
