John Vincent Wanless Jr., 62, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, in the Charleston Area Medical Center at Charleston, West Virginia.
He was born July 9, 1961 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, a son of Norma Isner Wanless of Elkins and the late John Vincent Wanless Sr.
On June 3, 2001, at Camp Pioneer, he married Jennifer L. Phillips, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jeremy Wanless and wife, Jessie, and Jeremy's mom and step-father, Kathy Gainer and Joe Gainer of Montrose and Kevin Wanless of Elkins; one daughter, Emily Wanless of Elkins; and one brother, Joseph Wanless of Elkins.
Also surviving are grandsons, Levi Wanless and Jacob and Willie Ward; father- and mother-in-law, John and Joyce Phillips of Beverly; sisters-in-laws, Beth Phillips of Ohio and Amy Erdman of Elkins; nephews, Bryan and Vince Wanless and Michael Love; nieces, Alexis Filker and Brandon, Madisyn and Morgan Talbott; and a special friend, Catherine Coberly.
John was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1979 and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Davis & Elkins College. He was a Correctional Officer at the Huttonsville Correctional Center at Huttonsville. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and he was a life-long member of the Buffalo Hills Hunting Camp in Pendleton County, WV where he loved to spend time. He loved playing and listening to music, but above all, he was a devoted family man. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elkins.
John's request for cremation was honored.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Beverly United Methodist Church.
A celebration of John's life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, from the church, with Rev Andrew Boley and Rev Cindy Morgan-Roberts officiating.
