Ward Wilson Cox, a lifelong resident of Elkins, West Virginia, until 2020, when he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to be with his daughter, departed this life on Jan. 29, 2024.
He was born on July 2, 1924, in Elkins, to Omer and Roxie Daniels Cox.
Mr. Cox attended Elkins schools and graduated from Elkins High School in 1942. He was a member of the football, basketball and track teams and played American Legion baseball. After graduation, he worked at Valley Supply until he enlisted in the United States Marines in May of 1943 to prepare to fight in World War II.
He served in the Pacific Theater and Okinawa after training in the states and was discharged on March 2, 1946.
After the war, Mr. Cox worked for 40 years for T & W Sales Co., later bought by Sell and Co. (Kraft Foods).
On Dec. 16, 1949, he married Betty Ruth Wamsley. She preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 2007.
He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Wendell, Maxwell and James.
He was involved in the VFW, American Legion and the Elkins Senior Center.
He is survived by his only daughter, Deborah Snyder (Peter); his two grandchildren, Joshua Snyder and Kari Kester (Michael); and two great grandsons, Andrew and Ryan Kester.
A Celebration of Mr. Cox's life will be held from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, at the Randolph County Senior Center, 5th St. & Railroad Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 to tell stories and remember Ward.
Private entombment will be held at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Senior Center, 5th St. & Railroad Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 or the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Cox.
