Proverbs tells us of the inestimable value of a virtuous woman, likening her worth to that of precious gems. The children, family, and friends of Ann Marie Hughes often called her 'Precious,' and they will forever cherish the many blessings she bestowed upon them throughout her long life, a life characterized by unwavering love and faith.
Ann Marie Hughes, 94, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully on the morning of March 20, 2024, at Rockland Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 25, 1929, in Thomas, West Virginia to Henry and Anna Cecilia (nee Stankus) Jeran.
The second of four children, Ann Marie spent her formative years in Cassity's coal mining community. She regarded her tight-knit family and the devout Catholic faith that her parents instilled in her as the cornerstones of her life.
Precious was also taught to appreciate the value of education; she devoted herself to her studies, graduating as valedictorian of Coalton High School's class of 1947. She attended Davis & Elkins College on scholarship for one year, then earned a BS degree in Library Science from West Virginia University in 1950. Her entire life, she was known far and wide as a die-hard Mountaineer sports fan.
While working as a librarian in Grafton, Ann Marie met the love of her life, Charles B. Hughes. They were married at St. Augustine's Catholic Church on Nov. 20, 1954, and relocated to Parkersburg in 1961, where they raised their growing family on 20th Street. Ann and Charlie opened their home to everyone; there was always room for one more around the table--just BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). Their hospitality and generosity of spirit have left an indelible mark on the community.
Ann Marie "Precious" Hughes is survived by her six children, Thomas F. Hughes (Bre), Robert M. Hughes (Elizabeth), Mary V. Maskell (Kevin), Charles H. Hughes (Jan Dils), James R. Hughes (Karen), and Dr. Anna E. Hughes; her 13 grandchildren, Kameron Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Steffan Hughes, Kathleen Woodyard (Jason), Joseph Hughes (Alisha), Philip Hughes (Alicia), Leah Bataineh (Zak), Lauren Weber, John Weber (Sydney), Peyton Hughes, Max Hughes, Hayden Hughes, and Spencer Hughes; her 15 great-grandchildren; her special friends, Kelli Anderson, Monsignor Jeremiah McSweeney, Jean Mewshaw, Randi Ward and Angie White.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Charles B. Hughes; her two brothers, Robert Jeran of Buckhannon, West Virginia, and Joseph Jeran of Elkins, West Virginia; her sister, Virginia Lester of Morgantown; and their parents.
Visitation will be held at Leavitt Funeral Home of Parkersburg from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024. Rosary service will take place at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, with Father Stephen Vallelonga as Celebrant. Burial to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
