Patricia "Patty" Lynch Karlen, 76, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, passed peacefully Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center at Elkins, following a brief illness, and with her loving family by her side.
She was born on Jan. 26, 1948, at Clarksburg, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Robert F. and Jean Wanstreet Lynch.
On Aug. 17, 1984, she married Thomas "Tom" David Karlen. They celebrated 33 years of marriage, until his passing on Aug. 7, 2017.
Patty graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1965 and faithfully attended class reunions and kept in close contact with many of her high school friends. She attended WV Business College and then held several clerical jobs in Elkins until her retirement in 2010.
Patty was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharist Minister and lector and was a member of the Holy Rosary Guild.
Patty is survived by one son, Matthew McCauley (Portia); and grandchildren, Matthew and Anna Tye of Elkins; and one daughter, Angela "Annie" McCauley of Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Also surviving are two brothers, Michael Lynch (Gloria) of Bridgeport, West Virginia, and Martin Lynch (Julie) of Clarksburg, West Virginia; and three sisters, Sally Myers (Jack) of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Mary Snelson (Arnold) of Elkins, West Virginia, and Jean Burnworth of Clarksburg, West Virginia; sister-in-law, Cherie Lynch; brothers-in-law, Glen Karlen (Sandy) and Terry Carr (Brenda); and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Lynch; her nephew, Trooper Brian W. Linn; her niece, Carley Burnworth; and brother-in-law, Denny Burnworth.
Patty enjoyed reading, listening to music, collecting glassware, and tending to her beautiful indoor plants. She could often be seen around Elkins taking long walks.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Hospice and ERCC for their care and compassion.
The family will receive friends at Saint Brendan Catholic Church at Elkins, West Virginia today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Thursday evening at 8 p.m., from the church, a wake service will be recited.
The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11 a.m.
Father James E. O'Connor will be the celebrant.
Interment will follow at the Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins, West Virginia.
