Helen Mae Champ White, 90, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center in Elkins, where she had been a resident for the past eight years.
Before moving to ERCC, she lived with her daughter, Karen Vance, a resident of Jimtown.
Born Oct. 7, 1933, at Flint, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Dexter "Dick" Champ and Daisy Maude Hawley Champ of Bemis.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having also being preceded in death by sisters, Edith Champ, who died in infancy, and Bernice Gooding; brothers, LT. Arthur Champ, who died in World War II as a fighter pilot, Jack, Buddy and Carl Champ.
She was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Thomas J. Letvin and Michael Lee Vance.
She is survived by her three daughters, Karen Vance of Jimtown, Dee Letvin of Lathrup Village, Michigan, and Sharon Brake of Charleston, West Virginia; two granddaughters, Mrs. Abbie (Kevin) Sack of Royal Oak, Michigan, and Samantha Letvin of Ferndale, Michigan; three grandsons, Brian Brake, Andrew Brake and Travis Brake; and a great-grandson, Lennon Sack, who referred to his great grandmother as Gi-Gi.
She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
She was a cook by trade, having worked at Third Ward School, Memorial General Hospital, Lamplight Restaurant and Davis Memorial Hospital before retiring. Her favorite things to make were chocolate fudge, banana nut bread and pineapple upside down cake. She sent many, many loaves of bread to her two grandsons and son-in-law while stationed in Desert Storm.
Helen loved animals more than she did people. She is survived by her cat, Parker, who lives with her daughter, Karen.
Helen White, a resident of ERCC had a weekly visitor, Bella, a yorkie belonging to her daughter. Bella brought not only joy to Helen, but all of the residents and employees at ERCC.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Robert Yothers Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mountain Hospice, 1002 South Crim Avenue, Belington, WV 26250 or to the Randolph County Humane Society, P. O. Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Helen.
