Howard Dennison Murphy Jr.

Howard Dennison Murphy Jr., of Montrose, passed away at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital with family by his side on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

He was born Sept. 14, 1950, in Elkins, to the late Howard D. Murphy Sr. and Mary Jane McNeil Murphy.

Howard is survived by his children, Howard Murphy III of Fulton, Mississippi, Tammie Rizzio and husband, Bryan, of Beverly, James Murphy and wife, Amy, of Elkins, and step-daughter, Melodee Wolford and husband, Doug, of Jimtown.

Siblings surviving include Dicy Likens, Brenda House and David Murphy. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kyle Murphy, Michelle Murphy, Nicholas Rizzio; and step granddaughter, Morgan Rizzio; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Howard was also preceded in death by grandson, Howard Murphy IV; brother, Billy Murphy; and sister, Diana Shreve.

Howard was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1970 and a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War.

He retired from the Federal Government, working for the GSA at the Jennings Randolph Federal Building and the Monongahela National Forest Supervisors Office Building, both in Elkins. He trained to be a boiler operator but considered himself a jack of all trades. Howard was a Baptist by faith and enjoyed playing chess, sketching pictures for family and friends and collecting coins. He especially enjoyed sharing his love of coin collecting with his grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Mike House officiating.

Interment will follow in the Leading Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery at Montrose, West Virginia.

Full Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the United States Navy, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Howard Dennison Murphy Jr.
