Miriam E. Thompson, 99, a resident of Montrose, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the home of her daughter, Millie Costello at Bybee, Tennessee.
She was born Feb. 27, 1925, at Yarmouth, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Frank Edward and Millie Nickerson Whelden. On Jan. 1, 1944, at Hyannis, Massachusetts, she was married to Leon Thompson who preceded her in death June 28, 1999. Surviving are three daughters, Millie Costello of Bybee, Tennessee, Mary Calvert of Newburg, West Virginia, and Lois Bowles of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; one son, Chesley Thompson of Maynard, Massachusetts; and one brother, David Whelden of Dennis Port, Massachusetts.
Nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren also survive.
Also preceding her in death were one son, Leon Earl Thompson; sisters, Inez Scott and Faith Hysaw; and brothers, Frank and George Whelden.
Miriam was Valedictorian of her high school graduating class in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mercy Chapel United Methodist Church at Montrose.
She was very active in her church community, was a member of the choir and secretary of the United Methodist Women's Group.
Miriam was a loving "Nana" to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and was voted World's Best Nana for 60 years straight.
Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, from the funeral home chapel, with Robert Hynes officiating and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrier Project, P.O. 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516 in memory of Miriam.
