William David "Dave" Burnside, 76, of Montrose, passed away at home on Wednesday April 10, 2024, after an extended illness. He was surrounded by family.
Dave was born on Feb. 26, 1948, in Valley Bend, the youngest child of Hoy and Evelyn (Crawford) Burnside.
He attended Homestead School and was 17 when he met the love of his life while hitch-hiking in Elkins.
He married Joy Diane Cosner on Jan. 15, 1966, in Hot Springs, Virginia. They made their home in Pennsylvania for a few years, and returned to Elkins with two young sons. Dave started working for Tri-County Electric in 1973, and he and Diane bought their first home in 1978 after the birth of their daughter.
Dave always had a project going - he enjoyed working on vehicles, especially his Studebakers. He was very mechanically inclined, and could fix anything that needed fixing. He loved to hunt and fish, drive down back roads on Sunday afternoon, camp with his family, and enjoy the life he and Diane had built together. He retired in 2005 as a master electrician.
He was predeceased by his wife, Diane; as well as his son, Michael David Burnside; his parents and his eight siblings, Hubert, Art, Dorla, Mary, Paul, Pauline, Lucille and Norm.
He is survived by his son, Charles Edward Burnside (Lori); his daughter, Debra Ann (Burnside) Senese (Edie Neville) and his daughter, Brittany (Burnside) Freels (Brian); and nine grandchildren, Alyssa Puffenbarger, Erin Burnside, Zachery Burnside, Dakota Clatterbuck, Hayley Neville, Hunter Neville, Dylan Senese, Hunter Mason and Elijah Freels. He also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday.
On Saturday, April 13, 2024, Mr. Burnside will be moved to the Elkins Church of the Brethren, where Final Rites will be conducted at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Daniel Ludwick and the Rev. James Snyder will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, West Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dave's memory to the Elkins Church of the Brethren Women's Fellowship.
