Mark Steven Wirth, born April 30, 1957, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away on May 6, 2024, in Elkins, West Virginia.
Mark was the son of Barbara Portz and Jack Wirth.
He was predeceased by his birth parents; as well as his stepfather, Alex Portz; and his brother, Bill Wirth.
In his formative years, Mark was known for his gentle demeanor despite his large stature -- a veritable gentle giant. He was a quiet man who enjoyed mowing the lawn at his home in Belington, playing pool and rocking out to Led Zeppelin while enjoying the occasional Budweiser.
Mark's life took a significant turn when he met his wife, Regina Strawderman. Together, they welcomed their son, Steven Wirth.
Determined to provide for his family, Mark made the bold decision to leave high school and pursue vocational training. He became a skilled stonemason, finding fulfillment in his work as a bricklayer. Steven fondly remembers his father's dedication to his craft, marked by the sight of his dusty tools and his powerful, stone-lifting arms.
However, Mark faced profound challenges due to severe mental health issues, ultimately leading to the dissolution of his family. Despite the unwavering support of those who loved him, Mark grappled with solitude and his struggles with mental health persisted until the end of his life.
His challenges serve as a somber reminder of the complexities of the human condition. Though his journey was marked by hardship, his memory will endure in the hearts of those who knew him, a reminder of the axiom that we are all fighting a hard battle.
