Mary ‘Susan’ Bennett

Mary "Susan" Bennett passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday May 24, 2024.

Susan would have celebrated her 101th birthday in 16 days.

Susan resided in North Philippi until she moved to Mansfield Place in December 2021.

Susan was born June 9, 1923, in Parsons, West Virginia, to Bliss Skidmore and Ruth (Comp) Skidmore.

Susan was united in marriage to Clyde E. Bennett on Dec. 23, 1939.

Susan is survived by three daughters, Sandra Kay Kerns, Janice Fay Bartlett and Nancy Jo Marsh; grandchildren, Mark Kerns and wife, Rose, Kelli Helmick and husband, David, Jeff Bartlett and wife, Becky, Pat Bartlett, Mindy Monteleone and husband, Phil, Lori Marsh and Cami Watkins and husband, Joe; great-grandchildren, Tre' Kerns and wife, Amy, Seth and wife, Kylie, Daniel, Levi and Aaron Helmick, Emily Hart and husband, Seth, Kyle Bartlett and wife, Sarah, Kayla Bartlett, Kelsey Poling and husband, Toby, Kamian Bartlett and wife, Mariah, Kiyan Bartlett and wife, Madi, Karriah Bartlett, Kase and Koyt Watkins, Dustin, Brady and Kinsey Price, Chance and Cole Price and Gianna Monteleone; great-great-grandchildren, Alivia Price, Gideon, Rhodie and Odessa Helmick, Stetson Kerns, Shepard Hart, Aria and Ivy Bartlett, Zola and Eiley Poling and Romee Bartlett.

Susan started working at the age of 9-years-old when her mother passed away leaving seven siblings to take care of while her father worked. Susan worked for C & P Telephone Company, Mon Power Company and Barbour County Schools as a cook until she retired in 1988.

Susan attended the Philippi United Methodist Church in her earlier years and was now a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Susan was a member of the Barbour County CEOS, Silent Grove CEOS and retired School Employees.

After retiring, Susan enjoyed traveling with her good friend the late Dorothy Swanson on numerous trips. Some hobbies Susan had was reading, gardening and her passion was her beautiful flowers. Susan walked 3-4 miles daily until the age of 85.

Preceding Susan in death were her father and mother, Bliss and Ruth Skidmore; husband, Clyde Bennett; brothers, Kenneth, Paul and Francis "Porky" Skidmore; and sisters, Wilma Skidmore, Lona Jenkins, Colleen Wilt and Vi Jean Fornos.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Tuesday, May 28, from 4-8 p.m. and on Wednesday. May 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. with Grandson Jeff Bartlett, Pastor Sam Haught and Grandson-in-law David Helmick officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
