Rev. T Gregory Lewis, age 78, a former resident of Belington, West Virginia, and more recently a resident of Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, Florida, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024.
He was called to heaven peacefully, at home with his loving wife/caretaker by his side. The chains of his earthly body have been released from 35 years of being bound to a wheelchair. To God be the glory.
Greg was born on Aug. 16, 1945, in Barbour County, West Virginia. The son of WWII Navy veteran and dairy farmer, the late Thomas Lewis, and homemaker mother, Jean.
He was married 58 years to his high school sweetheart, Sue Robinson, who survives him in Kissimmee, Florida.
He is also survived by three daughters, Natalie Combs and husband, Shannon, of Romney, West Virginia; Kim Walters and husband, Jason, of Cumberland, Maryland, and Nicole Parkinson and husband, Geoff, of Ashburn, Virginia; brothers, Gary Lewis and wife, Colleen, of Smithsburg, Maryland, and Tim Lewis of Moatsville, West Virginia; sisters, Paulette Picket of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Lanette Price of Moatsville, West Virginia; and Uncle Carl Loughridge and wife, Joyce, of Colliers, West Virginia. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Greg was raised on a beautiful active dairy farm where his work ethic, creativity, and empathy were formed. He was in the first graduating class at the new Philip Barbour High School in 1964. After accepting his Calling into the ministry, he served the United Methodist Church for 27 years, shepherding seven assigned appointments. It was with a heavy heart that he was forced into retirement after a hunting accident in the fall of 1988, which left him paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Greg shared his testimony of God's grace and love in all circumstances through the life he lived and shared with his incredible caretaker and loving wife, Sue.
A graduate of Fairmont State College and Duke University Divinity School, his gifts included the ability to connect with people of all ages. He was always very in tune with people's heartaches as well as their joys. Even with his very full schedule, he always made time to help others. Examples included playing Santa at his girls' schools, as well as substitute teaching. Things that brought Greg great enjoyment were his interest in -- and knowledge of -- all cars and his passion for aviation -- which brought about owning an ultralight aircraft. He loved taking ariel photos for his friends of their homes, which he knew they would love. And like his Heavenly Father, he was also a carpenter. This love of woodworking was a wonderful therapy for him and a way to witness to people at craft shows after he was unable to serve in active ministry.
Per Greg's request, cremation was honored. A memorial service will be held at the New Hope Valley Church in Valley Furnace, West Virginia, on Saturday May 25, 2024, with visitation from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and service starting at 2:30 p.m. with the Pastor Dale Waters officiating. Interment of his cremains will follow in the New Hope Cemetery.
