Betty Deloras Wright Walden, 94, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Sunday afternoon, June 16, 2024, at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center at Elkins with her loving family at her side and under the care of Mountain Hospice.
Betty was born Friday, July 12, 1929, at Mannington, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Homer Wright and Marbel Glover Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Streamy" Walden, whom she married on May 23, 1952, celebrating 66 years of marriage.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Ed) Tyre of Elkins; two grandsons, Richard Tyre of Orlando, Florida, and Matthew Tyre of Kissimmee, Florida; one sister, Barbara Benson of Buckhannon; three nephews, Brad (Debbie) Benson of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Doug (Shelly) Benson of Buckhannon, and Bob (Tonie) Walden of Olmstead Township, Ohio; several nieces, Paula Reedy and Vickie (Keith) Spitzer, both of Staunton, Virginia, Diane (Dare) Brunner and Gayle Walden, all of Avon Lake, Ohio.
Betty had several special people in her life, Marty Brewster, who was like a daughter to her, Marilyn Tilley and Debbie Teets Pritt.
Betty attended Fairmont State College where she received her bachelor of arts, majoring in math and a double minor in English and elementary education. Later she completed her master's degree in administration at West Virginia Univeristy.
Betty became a math teacher, teaching in McDowell County schools and served as the principal from 1967-1968 at Coal Wood School, in McDowell County, War, West Virginia. Betty later moved to Randolph County and began teaching there. She taught higher level math and was proud of her students, one in particular, Jeff Triplett, who became a succesful lawyer practicing in Elkins.
Betty was a charter member of the Elkins Lionness Club, Elkins Lions Club, State Retired Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins, where she served as the president of the Woman's Group.
Thanks to ERCC where she was a resident since June 2023. A very loving and caring staff of nurses and CNA's took pride in caring for her every need. A special thanks to Mary Fuestel, CNA, who was with her since June 2023.
Betty's mother said, "idle hands are the devil's workshop." Betty was always busy doing things with her hands. She knitted 100 toboggans every year for the backpack program at her church, made jewelry, plastic canvas and beautiful handmade embroidery cards. She always had a needle in her hand, thinking of the next project she could create.
Betty's request for cremation was honored. The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the church, Sunday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Brian Seders officiating.
