John was eighty-eight years old, born on July 9, 1936, to Adanijah and Bertha Etta Nelson Minear.

John and Alta were blessed with two daughters, Sharon Tenney and husband, Roger, and Jeanne Shiflett and the late Steve Shiflett; and one son, Josh Scott and wife, Beth.

John was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Elijah Coal; and his two sisters, Polly and Nancy.
John attended the schools of Randolph County and worked for several local sawmills. He will be missed by so many friends and family members who love him and will carry his memories spread his love. He brought joy to everyone he met. He enjoyed watching wrestling, watching westerns, reading the Bible, taking car rides with Alta no matter where they went, and loved spending time with his family. Of course, he loved his sweets. Psalm 34:18 says, The Lord is close to those who are brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. As we know, John loves his family and the Lord and we hope everyone will share John's loving spirit.
