Walter John Brown, 77, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2024, at the Tygart Valley Health & Rehabilitation at Belington, West Virginia, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice. He had been in declining health since February.
He was born Thursday, Aug. 1, 1946, at home, in Cravensdale, West Virginia, a son of the late Robert Kenneth Brown Sr. and Doris Lorraine Woods Brown. He was twice married. First, on Jan. 7,1967, he was married to the former Mary Jo Hudson, who preceded him in death May 7, 1995, and secondly, on Oct. 11, 2002, at Elkins, West Virginia, to the former Phyllis Murrie Reed, who preceded him in death Sept. 28, 2009.
Surviving are two sons, Theodore Lee Brown and wife, Jennifer, of Van Wert, Ohio, and David Patrick Brown of Cross Lanes, West Virginia; one daughter, Mary Ruth Tucker and husband, Hubert Junior Tucker, of Hurricane; four brothers, Charles “Chuck” Ross Brown and wife, Martha, of Spring Grove, Pennslvania, Terry Lee Brown and wife, Penny, of Harding, Edward Dale Brown and wife, Rose, of Kerens, and Leslie Martin Brown of Philippi; three sisters, Elizabeth Marie Brown of Buckhannon, Marth Jane Walters and husband, Gary, of Elkins, and Mary Elaine Walters and husband, Terry, of Elkins; three grandchildren, Randy Lynn Hill Jr. and wife, Stacey, of Hurricane, West Virginia, Heather Lee Hill of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, and Michael Dustin Lee Hash of Van Wert, Ohio; and one great-granddaughter, Serenity Lynn Woodall of South Charleston, West Virginia.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, Everett “Allen” Brown, Robert Kenneth Brown Jr. and Eugene Harper Brown; and two nephews.
Walter attended the one room schoolhouse at Cravensdale, had worked as a janitor at Davis & Elkins College and retired from the Scott Depot Christ Fellowship School. He enjoyed bowling and working in his vegetable and flower gardens. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Walter was a Christian by faith, a hard worker and was always staying active.
Later in life he liked to sit on the porch in the mornings, drinking his coffee and watching wildlife. He loved his family immensely and enjoyed the time they spent together.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 1 until 2 p.m., Friday Aug. 2, 2024. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Friday Aug. 2, 2024, at 2 p.m. Pastor Jim Burns will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, West Virginia.
