Gary A. ‘Snork’ Schoonover
SCHOONOVER
Gary A. “Snork” Schoonover, 84, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, July 31, 2024, in the Davis Medical Center.
He was born June 23, 1940, in Elkins, a son of the late Edgar Schoonover and the late Ruth Lunsford Schoonover.
On May 7, 1960, at Oakland, Maryland, he was married to Ruth Lynn Sommerville, who survives in Elkins.
Also surviving is one son, Todd Schoonover and Rebecca of Elkins; a daughter, Tracye Murphy and Mike of Wall, New Jersey.
Three grandchildren, Taylor and Griffen, Jacob and Kayla and Mason and Amber; and three great-grandchildren, Oaklea, Blakely and Brooks also survive.
Gary was a graduate of Elkins High School and Fairmont State College.
He was employed in the banking and Insurance industries prior to his retirement.
He was a Life Member of the Tygart Valley Lions Club, Director Emeritus of the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center, Director Emeritus of the Mountain State Forest Festival, Director Emeritus of the Randolph County Community Arts Council, Director Emeritus of the Elkins Randolph County YMCA, Federal Plaza Committee, First United Methodist Church of Elkins serving on the Trustees Committee for many years, Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM, Tygart Valley Shine Club, B.P.O.E. Lodge No 1135 and numerous other organizations.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Davis Medical Center, Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center, Mountain Memories, Dr. Chua and Dr. David Davis.
Gary’s request for cremation has been honored.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at the Israel Church Cemetery near Kerens, West Virginia.
Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and Rev. Tim Edin will officiate.
Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM will conduct masonic graveside rites.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church General Fund, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Gary.
