Mary Margaret Ferguson Schoonover, 84, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, in the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was born July 1, 1940, at Montrose, a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Holbert Ferguson.
She is survived by one son, Paul David Schoonover and wife, Lydia, Elkins; three daughters, Mary Virginia "Ginny" Williams of Elkins, Bonita Lee Mallow and husband, Mike, Phillippi, West Virginia, and Bonnie Lee Schoonover of Elkins.
Two brothers, Terrence Junior Ferguson and wife, Dora, and Jack Lee Ferguson and wife, Betty, all of Montrose, sister-in-law, Linda Ferguson of Montrose; three sisters, Carolyn Sue Coffman and husband, Charles, Montrose, Paula Virginia Ferguson of Elkins and Starlet Allyson Levy of Hicksville, Ohio; also survive along with grandchildren, Shannon Riffle, Julie Williams, Joshua and Shane Mallow, Walker Schoonover and Lori Beth Prendergrast; several great and great-great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, "Toto."
Also preceding her in death were one son, Thomas Arlen Schoonover; one daughter; Pamela Allyson Schoonover; one brother, Thomas Lynn Ferguson; and brother-in-law, Neil Levy.
Mary attended the schools of Randolph County. She was employed by G.C. Murphy Company, Duke's Restaurant, Elkins Parks and Recreation Summer Program and participated in the Foster Grandparent Program at Third Ward elementary School for 15 years. She was employed as a CNA at Nella's Nursing Home for 15 years prior to her retirement. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren she adored and tending to her flower beds. Mary was a Woman of Faith who enjoyed reading her Bible.
The family would especially like to thank "Rhoda" for her friendship, the staff of Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center and Mountain Hospice for the care they provided Mary.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until noon, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Robert Yothers Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
The family request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, P.O. Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 or to a charity of choice in memory of Mary.
