Edward ‘Ed’ Allen Tyre

Edward “Ed” Allen Tyre, 72, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, at the Mon General Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. He had been recently diagnosed with leukemia, heart issues and kidney failure, and was preparing to return to Elkins, West Virginia, for rehab.

He was born on June 7, 1952, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Albert Emmit and Laura Mae Scott Tyre.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Walden Tyre, whom he married on June 21, 1975; two sons, Richard Edward Tyre, Orlando, Florida, and Matthew Albert Tyre and “Zoey,” a special four legged companion, Kissimmee, Florida.

Also, preceding him in death was his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard “Streamy” and Betty Deloras Wright Walden.

Ed attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of the class of 1971. He recently retired from the Elkins Builder Supply, after serving there since 1975. He was a people person, loved waiting on customers and enjoyed “shooting the bull” with the employees as well as the customers.

Ed knew no strangers, enjoyed talking to anyone. He was a public servant, always wanting to help out, especially with the young kids, donating and showing support to whatever the cause. Ed served on the Randolph County Board of Education for 20 years, where he was responsible for keeping track of the budget as he loved working with numbers. He was a Cub Master in the Boy Scouts of America, Pack 88, where he was able to enjoy with his boys. His youngest son, Matt, achieved the Eagle Scout ranking. Ed was a member of the Elkins Lions Club, past president of the Third Ward Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization. Ed also served on the Randolph County Republican Executive Committee, where he was the youngest elected member, serving at age 18. Ed had received the Republican of the Year Award in 2015. He had strong ties to politics and always enjoyed working the polls during the elections and going to the courthouse to talk with others and hear the results as they rolled in.

Ed was an avid collector of Hallmark, Department 56, Possible Dream Santa’s and particularly enjoyed decorating for Christmas. He looked forward to stopping at all the Hallmark Stores, from West Virginia to Florida, when traveling down to see his boys.

Ed is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Albert Tyre, Becky’s Creek, West Virginia, and Keith Tyre, Elkins, West Virginia; and three sisters, Charlene Tyre Snodgrass, Carolyn Jean Tyre Jackson and husband, Roger, and Marilyn Tyre Moore and husband, George, all of Elkins, West Virginia.

Ed was preceded in death by a sister, Iris Kay Tyre; sister-in-laws, Jo Ellen Tyre and Joyce Tyre; and brother-in-law, William “Bill” Snodgrass.

Ed had several nieces and nephews and cherished them all.

Surviving are Sandy Hogan, Elkins, West Virginia, and Julie (Brian) Simmons, Elkins, West Virginia, Kim (Dale) Hayes, Richmond, Virginia, Kenneth Lee Tyre, Becky’s Creek, West Virginia, Rebecca (Sam) Marshall, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Deborah (Craig) Hart, Lubbock, Texas, Sarah (Evan) Larson, Bismarck, North Dakota, and Brian (Sarah) Tyre, Elkins, West Virginia.

Ed had many great nieces and nephews, Garrett and Rachel Simmons, Morgantown, West Virginia, Laura Simmons, Harrogate, Tennessee, Caroline Simmons, Morgantown, West Virginia, Tim Marshall, Lydia Marshall and Nick Marshall, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sam Johnson, Ft. Hood, Texas, Ashley Carey, Ft. Mills, South Carolina, Luke and Michael Larson, Bismarck, North Dakota, Sean Tyre, Ohio, Hayley (Cody) Kerns, Elkins, West Virginia, Lainey Tyre, Elkins, West Virginia; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the the Emergency room and Intensive Care at the Davis Medical Center, and the Mon General Hospital staff.

Ed was hospitalized around a month in Morgantown. The family appreciates the nurses and doctors that took care of Ed. One special nurses aide at Mon General Hospital, William “Billy” Mosby, was always encouraging Ed to stay positive, trying to bring a smile to his face. The family cannot thank him enough. You certainly made a difference in Ed’s life during the past 30 days.

Ed cherished friendship with Rob Nestor and the late Tom Williams. They shared lots of stories over the years.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr Barb Funeral Home, Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A celebration of life will be held at Elkins First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV, on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, at 2 p.m.

Pastor Tim Edin will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins, West Virginia.

The family has requested memorial donations in lieu of flowers, and can be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Attention: Scott Harris, 65 13th Street, Elkins, WV; Elkins Area Band Auxiliary, Post Office Box 821, Elkins, WV 26241.
