Sylvia June Chewning Grimm

Mrs. Sylvia June Chewning Grimm, 93, a resident of Philippi, and more recently of Mansfield Place at Philippi, departed this life Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2024, in the care facility. Death was following a period of declining health.

She was born Dec. 28, 1930, at Elkins, West Virginia, a daughter of the late French Roosevelt and Hazel Glenna Huffman Chewning.

On Aug. 8, 1949, she was united in marriage to Earl Lee “Duck” Grimm, who preceded her in death in 2015.

Left to cherish her memory are three children, Ben Grimm of Aquasco, Maryland, Frankie Archibald and husband, Joe, of Phillipi, and Tensel Leach and husband, Leon, of Tyler, Texas; three grandchildren, Joel R. Archibald and wife, Brittany, of Manassas, Virginia, Micah L. Archibald and wife, Sophie, of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Montgomery Devon Leach and wife, Cher, of New Ulm, Texas.

Additional survivors include 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Delma “Bunny” Miller and Margie Pope and one infant brother.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Sylvia attended the schools of Randolph County. Before her health began to decline, she attended the Liberty Baptist Church in Buckhannon. She was formerly a waitress at the Hilton Hotel at Washington D.C. and also was formerly employed with the Davis & Elkins College, where she especially loved to work hospitality events. She also belonged to the Elkins High School Alumni and was instrumental in obtaining the Elkins Tiger. When the new high school in Ekins was constructed, she played a major role in getting the name changed from Forest Hills High School back to Elkins High School. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends will be received at the Liberty Baptist Church, 44 Riggs Lane, Buckhannon, WV 26201, on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, from 10 a.m. to noon, the funeral hour, at which time final rites will be conducted from the church with the Pastor John H. Burns officiating.

Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
