Gerald "Mike" Silvester, 75, passed away on November 1, 2024, in Sugarland, Texas. Born on Dec. 28, 1948, Gerald lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country and his profession.
Gerald completed his education at Coalton High School before advancing to West Virginia University. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors. Gerald's professional career was as dynamic as it was illustrious. Starting at the Department of Energy as an electrical engineer, he later contributed significantly to Phillips 66 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. His career path also led him to Union Carbide in Charleston, West Virginia, and finally Dow Chemical in Houston, Texas, where he left a lasting impact.
A proud veteran, Gerald served as an Army Sergeant from 1969 to 1970. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor, reflecting his bravery and commitment to his country.
Gerald was a loving husband to Peggy Silvester and a devoted father to Brett Silvester and Janell Hutchens. His family extended to his daughter-in-law, Amy Silvester, son-in-law, Edward Hutchens Jr., and his cherished grandchildren, Abigail, Keely, Isabella and Wyatt. His brother, Robert Silvester, also survives him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Jean and Gerald F. Silvester; brother, William "Billy Joe" Silvester; and his in-laws, Rosalie and Clayton "Taty" Phillips.
Throughout his life, Gerald found joy in the outdoors, enjoying fishing and hunting in his younger years. Later, he cherished traveling and spending precious moments with his grandchildren. These experiences were treasured and reflected his deep love for his family. Gerald's life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Saturday at 1 p.m. Ralph Bennett and the Rev. Father Jim O'Connor will officiate and interment will follow at the American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale, West Virginia, where full military honors will be accorded by members of the West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H.W. Daniel's Post 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
