Hollis Carl Vance, 86, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Monday evening, Nov. 11, 2024, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living at Elkins, West Virginia.
He was born Thursday, Jan. 13, 1938, at Whitmer, West Virginia, a son of the late Snowden Lester Vance Sr., and Dora Lambert Vance.
On Nov. 22, 1962, at Elkins, West Virginia, he was married to the former Adrienne Semones, who survives. They had celebrated 61 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Dora "Liz" MacVean and husband, Chris, of Elkins, and Rebecca "Becky" Nucilli and husband, Jimmy, of Martinsburg; two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Marshall-Roy and husband, Heath, of Elkins, and Noah James Nucilli of Elkins; two step-grandsons, Timothy M. MacVean and Crystal of Elkins; Carl J. MacVean and wife, Caity, of Wytheville, Virginia; and one step great-grandson, Timothy Alexander "Alex" MacVean of Elkins.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are four brothers, Hansel Brooks, Elwood "Glenn," Broze Foye and Snowden Lester Vance Jr.; and one infant sister, Argie Mae Vance.
Hollis was a graduate of Harman High School with the class of 1955, received a BA in Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1959, and then served in the U.S. Army. He received his MA in Education from West Virginia University in 1967. He was an Educator for the Randolph County Board of Education, worked as a social worker for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, as a counselor for the West Virginia Department of Employment Security and later as office manager, retiring in 1989. He then became the owner and president of Temporary Employment Services, Computer Training Center and the J.C. Penny Catalog Store. After retirement, he worked as a sales representative for Teter Motors in Elkins.
He was a former member and past president of the Elkins Kiwanis Club, and a former member of the Elkins Lodge 1135, B. P. O. E. He was a member of the Randolph Lodge 55, A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, was a member of the Scottish Rite of Clarksburg and was a Shriner.
Hollis had been a member of the Randolph County Board of Education and the Elkins City Council. He was an active Protestant having served many churches as a Sunday school teacher.
He loved his grandchildren greatly, enjoyed golf and his hometown of Whitmer, West Virginia.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024 from noon to 2 p.m. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday at 2 p.m. Pastor Bob Yothers will officiate and interment will follow at the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Whitmer, West Virginia, where the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H.W. Daniel's Post 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors and the Randolph Lodge 55, A. F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic graveside rites.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Whitmer Community Church, P. O. Box 228, Whitmer, WV 26296.
