Barbara Jean Carr Harvey, 94, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life early Saturday morning, Dec. 21, 2024, at the Davis Medical Center Emergency Department.
She was born Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1930, at Hendricks, WV a daughter of the late Pete Lindsey Carr and Macie Susan White Carr.
On Jan. 5, 1952, at Oakland, Maryland, she was married to Robin Lee Harvey, who preceded her in death March 12, 1985.
Surviving are one son, T. Richard "Dick" Harvey and wife, Roseann, of Elkins; one brother, Granville Carr and wife, Roxanne, of French Creek; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Keith Harvey and wife, Deanna, of Falls Church, Virginia, Steven Matthew Harvey of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Joseph Francis "Josh" Super of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania; three great-grandchildren, Talia Robin Harvey, Asher Gerard Harvey and Garrett Benjamin Harvey, all of Falls Church, Virginia.
Preceding her in death are one daughter, Deborah Kay Super; three brothers, Gary Carr, Paul Carr and Dale Carr; and two sisters, Betty Kelley and Pansy Gibbons.
Barbara was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1947, had been employed as a secretary for the FBI in Washington, D.C., the Agriculture Extension Service at Elkins, Elkins High School and Third Ward Elementary School. She was later employed by the Randolph County Board of Education in the Accounting Department, from which she retired in 1993.
Barbara had been a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, having faithfully attended for 56 years. She was on the committee to form the first church directory, was a member of the Ladies Circle and counted the weekly offering for 20 years. Barbara led the church visitation team for almost 30 years. Through the visitation team, she shared and cared for a group of shut-ins that looked forward to her weekly visits
She was a Princess for the Mountain State Forest Festival in 1951, was a member of the Randolph County Association of Retired School Employees and former Woman's Club member. Barbara was the adopted mother of the Davis & Elkins College Baseball Team from 1975 to 1978 -- having made many meals for the young players.
She was an avid quilter.
Barbara quietly cared for others, often buying clothes and shoes for children in need during her time as elementary school secretary.
The family would like to thank Valentine's Assisted Living and all the staff for the wonderful care given to their loved one.
Barbara was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be dearly missed. She was extremely proud of being Grandma to her beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was loved by all who met her.
Barbara lived a long and beautiful life.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.
Final Rites will be conducted from the church on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Brett Rinehart will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, West Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Barbara to the First Baptist Church, Shining Light Christian Academy, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
