Charles Andrew McCauley

McCAULEY

Charles Andrew McCauley, 87, a resident of Gilman, West Virginia, departed this life Sunday evening, Dec. 1, 2024, at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Wednesday, March 31, 1937, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late John Maynard McCauley and Mary Elizabeth Arbuthnot McCauley.

On Feb. 26, 1966, at the Elkins First Church of the Nazarene at Elkins, he was married to the former Gloria Jean Martin, who survives. They had celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Charles Andrew "Andy" McCauley and wife, Susan; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Teets and husband, Jonathan; one brother, John Maynard McCauley; five grandsons, Charles "Casey" McKay, John McCauley, Patrick McKay, William "Bill" McCauley and Michael McCauley; one niece, Emaryia Adams and husband, Jeff; and one nephew, Michael Aaron Benggon and wife, Claudia.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Amanda Benggon.

In his young life, Charles spent his time hunting, fishing and spending time with his many cousins.

Charles was an instrumental figure in his grandson's lives, teaching them invaluable lessons and forming individual bonds with each of them.

As he grew older, he enjoyed playing the harmonica in an old-time music group, Philmore & Friends. Charles and his wife passed their love of music on to their grandsons.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. He was a 1956 graduate of Elkins High School. Charles spent over 20 as a veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant. As part of his military service, he and his family lived in several states in the United States and abroad, in Korea and Germany. Charles was a highly decorated combat veteran, serving two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and one tour in Korea. He had worked for 19 and a half years as a correctional officer for the State of West Virginia at the Huttonsville Correctional Center.

He was a member of the Elkins First Church of the Nazarene for several years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
